There are several different animals that resemble domestic, pet ferrets. Stoats, Polecats, Weasels, Pine  Martins, Black-Footed Ferrets all have a long slender body, long tail, long neck, and small, flat triangle-shaped heads with round ears. Black-Footed Ferrets (Mustela nigripes) are the only Wild Ferret.  Pet Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are domesticated descendants of European ferrets (Mustela putorius), sometimes called polecats.

Are there different types of ferrets? While cats and dogs come in many breeds, the domestic ferret is a single breed. Unlike the black-footed ferret, the domestic ferret does not have one standard color or coat pattern. Like cats and dogs, ferrets can have a variety of different colors and coat patterns.

Kibble is the standard ferret food. But, as carnivores, ferrets need a meat-based protein diet for optimal health.

Wysong has developed several ferret foods with this in mind.  Two of these are Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 Digestive Support and Wysong Ferret Epigen 90. There has been some confusion because of the similar names.

Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 Digestive Support is the original Wysong Ferret Epigen kibble remarketed.  The newer version, Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 is more concentrated. It has more protein and more fat. That should be a good thing; however, it is too rich for some ferrets and can cause digestive problems. The original version, now called Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 Digestive Support contains soluble fiber, and an enhanced pre-biotics that helps to support digestive health and stool consistency. Have you ever wanted to take your ferret with you but wondered the best way to carry her?

Quite a few years ago,  I decided to take my ferret, Chantile, on a several hour Greyhound bus ride. I was visiting a friend for a few days and didn’t want to leave her behind.  I was in graduate school and didn’t have much money so I had to make do with what I had to carry her in.

Of course animals are not allowed on the bus, so I had to be sure she was not seen (or heard). I didn’t have a ferret pet carrier (or any type of pet carrier) so I used a regular nylon carry-on bag. That was an adventure!

Since she couldn’t see out and didn’t know what was going on, she kept scratching at the bag, trying to get out. Well, you know how persistent ferrets can be! On the quiet bus someone was sure to hear her. So I unzipped the bag a little and stuck my hand in. That’s all it took. She just needed reassurance that I was there. I kept my hand in there the whole trip.

There are now an extensive number of pet carriers, many made for small pets such as ferrets. But just because they may say they are for ferrets (and chinchillas and rabbits and…), doesn’t mean they are a good choice. Ferrets view people, other ferrets, and other animals in a variety of ways. But primarily as a playmate. As a carefree and fearless pet, ferrets above all love to play. Ferrets can play very hard, and without  meaning to, could harm another pet.

Another way ferrets may see another pet, such as a cat, is as an enemy. A fearful ferret will defend himself if he feels cornered. A jealous ferret might act aggressively toward a cat if you aren’t paying enough attention to him.

A Cat’s Point of View

Cats view people as their servants and other pets as either toys, prey, predators or rivals. Cats may see small ferret kits as a new toy to play with or as a tasty snack! Cats are also territorial and may see a ferret as an intruder to his territory, which he must defend. Some cats will also become jealous if they are not getting the attention they demand. Any one of these characteristics may cause a cat to potentially hurt a ferret.
